I’ve been using ring for 5+ years, STAY AWAY FROM THE SPOTLIGHT CAM PRO. I’d even recommend the $100 stick up cam over this one. Here is my list on why you should NOT buy this camera:

-Misses a ton of motion even with motion settings fully maxed out.

-“pre-record” is garbage. Just blurry video that my stick up cam/normal spotlight cam would have picked up in clear footage.

-“Birds eye view” is useless. Has a ton of potential but only catches motion in the tiny window they give you, and the “motion tracking” is BS and not accurate.

This camera is directly next to my car. Every day multiple people walk by my car, and my other ring cameras further away catch it, but not this camera RIGHT NEXT TO THE CAR. I ended up replacing this with my stick up cam. Ring sent me a new one and it’s the same story with the new one. Horrible product.

I bought four of these to replace the older Ring Spotlight Cams that only did 2.4ghz WiFi. These work great! The 5Ghz is a vast improvement – they are much more reliable, video doesn’t stutter or chop. (Be aware though, 5Ghz has less range than 2.4, so plan for that in your deployment.)

Installing was a snap – they work perfectly with the old cameras mounts, it’s the same ball-mount system; I simply loosened the old ones and removed the cameras, snapped these in and pointed them, and tightened back down. It took longer to configure the cameras software to my liking than to install them.

They are also compatible with the old batteries and solar panels – BUT, for the old panels you will need to spend $12 on a barrel-to-usb-c adapter. Well worth it to not have to replace the panels and re-run wiring. The batteries are identical with the old ones.

I saw a review saying you couldn’t mount them under a soffit – this is BS, you absolutely can. You have to remove the back panel with the ball and turn it over so that it’s angled up. Angled down is for mounting on a vertical surface, like a wall or fence; angled up for a horizontal surface, like under a soffit. Works just fine, and there are instructions on the Ring website that show you how to orient everything if you need them.

All in all, it’s a Ring camera – if you’re already in the ecosystem then you know what to expect. It works, and works well, and the 5Ghz WiFi is a welcomed (and sorely needed) improvement!

The device is high quality but the requirement to recharge the battery pack diminishes the value of the device. Some consideration should have been given to the design. An option to charge while the camera is still operational would have made this device PERFECT.

I purchased two of these because I’m already using Ring products for my home, and I chose the battery + solar option because there’s no electrical wiring available.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed to find that the battery life of the cameras was incredibly short, and even with the solar panel fully connected and power efficiency settings at their minimum, I had to charge the cameras every week. Despite following all the troubleshooting steps recommended by Ring, I saw no improvement in performance.

At this point, I can barely rely on the cameras to function properly. If you’re in the market for a solar or battery-powered camera, I suggest looking elsewhere.

The birdseye features doesn’t work well yet given the map partner doesn’t have imagery for Australia. Amazon needs to fix. They’ve said it’s on their roadmap.

Otherwise the camera is great and new 2022 technology over the previous 2018 one.

I have a few Ring cameras and this one has the best picture quality. It’s also quicker to respond when requested to go live. I plan to buy another.

I chose the Ring Spotlight Cam because I already am using a Ring doorbell cam, and it has worked well. I am using the Spotlight Cam to view our backyard, so we have views of both front and back now. I chose the battery-operated model so it would be easier to move it around and select the best location. Linking the Spotlight Cam to my Ring app was easy. Setting up a perimeter for it was easy, too. And it does a good job of detecting motion, from small animals to people.

The only issue I had was the mounting method. The base provides plenty of flexibility, and so the camera can be mounted on a wall or suspended from a ceiling, soffit, or other horizontal surface. But the collar set screw was difficult to use, mainly because it was glued in place. I assume that is for security purposes, so no one can steal the camera. But because it was so hard to screw in or out, I chose to use a hose clamp to secure the camera to the mount, as shown in the attached photo. That was much easier.

Battery life is a minor issue. 10 days after I first installed the camera, the Ring app saaid that it only had 3% charge left. Of course, it was -10F outside then, and that is not good for batteries. It is easy enough to recharge the battery with the included cable and any standard USB charger. But the camera also has provision to use two batteries, so bought another battery. One good feature is that the camera uses one battery at a time, so when one gets down to 50% or less, then I recharge it while the camera runs off the second battery.

Finally, my Ring doorbell came with a free one-year trial of the Ring Protect basic plan. And it automatically included the backyard camera when I installed it. You need that plan to be able to go back and review events that triggered a notification. Without that ability, it is not near as useful. So, I have renewed that service for both devices. The cost is a little steep at $40/year per device, so in my case it is $80 per year.

Bird’s Eye View and 3D Motion are the chief selling points of this product. What you are not told is that you will need to live in an area where High Resolution Satellite imagery is up to date and available for your property for this to work. Otherwise, you just bought a camera that’s basically the same as the previous generation camera for $100 more.

I purchased this spotlight together with a solar panel.but unfortunately, it can’t use the motion warning function. Has anyone bought the outdoor wired one that can use motion warning?
