I was relieved after receiving this new Ring Solar panel to find that it used the same screw hole pattern for mounting onto the wall as the Doorbell 4 which was previously mounted to the wall. Couldn’t find that info anywhere beforehand so had taken a gamble. Also pleased that (luckily) I had originally mounted the doorbell far enough away from the corner edge of my brick wall so that the new solar panel didn’t project over the brick edge. I so much wanted to avoid re-drilling!
So, easy swap, after figuring out the screws needed. For some reason the newer mounting screws going into the wall had tapered heads instead of flat on the originals. I used the tapered ones, but made sure I did not over tighten them. Strangely, the packet of machine screws for then mounting the doorbell onto the solar panel contained 3 x small screws and 5 x long ones. The long ones were suitable and I used them but I wondered where on earth the really short ones could be used? Never mind.
There are two machine screws existing on the back of the doorbell to accept the terminal wire from the solar panel. Those screws were nearly impossible to release! I had to get the exactly right sized screwdriver and apply enormous pressure. Nearly gave up but eventually they turned.
After reinserting the battery, all good and the phone app recognized that “A Ring solar accessory is connected and able to charge this device”. Nice.
No decrease in battery charge yet but it’s very early days yet. I’ll try to update this once I find out more. The doorbell gets about 2-3 hours of sunlight per day which may not be enough to maintain the charge but if it helps hold the charge a bit longer I’ll be happy.
Edit – when installed battery was 73% charged, now a week later it’s 76% and sometimes has been above 80%. So works a treat.

Works perfect and the easiest install for my ring doorbell 3 .Holds charge to battery all day .
No need to unscrew to recharge battery ever again
30s videos on away mode constantly at 77% to 70% battery ,once I got the device I never recharged battery ,just plugged it in and walked away

I bought a solar charger for my rear door Ring 4 (south facing), installed last week of February , and tested for 2 weeks. To be honest, it doesnt really benefit unless you get at least a few hours of direct sun a day. You will otherwise see the battery level going down daily even with very light use. The mini solar panel is not really up to the job in low light for UK. With hind site I would probably have bought the larger solar panel charger, as I could put this on a fence, and would probably work better in lower light.

On 3 / 4 occasions over the last 2 weeks on test, it also does not show connected on the App, even below 80% battery level , and did not seem to charge at all. (note: It took a day or so, to show that its connected / charging when first connected, which is really not very clever, as you really need instant way to check its working – this is normal apparently ).
A reboot through the app seems to be needed to resolve on the few occassions it seem to stop working.
This may be a firmware issue so will give it a few months to see if it improves on connectivity .
I assume if the solar pack battery drops to a low level, it forgets that its connected.

As long as it charges in Spring / Summer, then I dont mind having to charge manually once a month in the darker months.
So will give 3 star for now, and will update in a few months, if improves.

*** Update *** – Ring support kindly contacted me via amazon and offered to send me a new larger solar panel to test. Great service ! Will update with results ,

I got this hoping it would extend the battery life, but knowing that as the solar panels are small the impact might be non-existent, but even if it extends the battery a week I’d be happy.

It’s been installed a little over a week and when I put it on the battery was at 95%. Today, it’s still sitting at 95% so seems to be providing some benefit. Ours is facing east and has sun until around lunchtime. As it’s still winter I don’t think it’s too bad performance wise.

That said, we have a CCTV system on the house so the doorbell is only set to record when someone sets foot on our drive. It might drain the battery a lot more if it was recording every car driving up the street.

    So far, so good.

Solar panel does not charge the battery. It’s only for maintaining the battery, but this doesn’t happen. Battery still drains the same as without it. Waste of money.

This ‘solar charger’ is a small 0.57W charging mount which looks great.

I roughly calculated that the 33Wh ring battery, with a 3 month battery life would only require around 0.3Wh of charge per day. Or in other terms, 45minutes of ‘direct’ sunlight a day (without clouds) to maintain the battery 🔋 charge.

On a very sunny day, this solar charger mount can charge the battery by around 2-4% (in the day obviously). It will hold (maintain) the charge % on lightly cloudy days and will ‘reduce the battery drain speed’ (slightly discharge) on rainy days.

The battery will drain by 1-2% overnight, so a you are looking at between 3% charge (over 24hours) to 2% discharge per day dependent on conditions.
This means a battery with full charge will still require charging (depending on location) once or twice a year over winter.
In summer this solar charger can charge / sustain the battery, but you will likely need to charge the battery in December and February (even in direct sunlight).

This should help you temper your expectations of this charge mount. Note the battery will not start charging until <85% charge to reduce chemical ageing. Much easier than changing a battery every 5/6 weeks.

My 2nd gen solar charger is not compatible with my 2nd gen Ring device making fitting impossible without modifying the base plate of the device.

I would have expected the charger to be a compatible fit to the holes already drilled into my wall for the Ring device but they are not and we had to drill more holes in the brick work to fit the charger frame.

We then discovered that the screw holes to secure the base plate for the bell do not align with the charger so we were forced to modify the base plate for the bell to fit it to the charger plate.

Very poor considering the bell and the charger were 2nd gen Ring devices.

The solar charger does help prolong the battery life between charging is required but it’s not a full charging solution.
This was not clear when I read the details of the part before buying.
So it’s helpful but not amazing.

Seeing up was easy enough and everything goes in the places it should. However the solar doesn’t charge as good as it should. You will still need to charge the battery anyway. So it’s really a waste of time.
